The Stockholm Cultural Festival won’t be in full swing until August 2006, but a 3-day megateaser called Under Construction 05 will take place this weekend, September 2–4. Sergels Torg and the area near Stockholm’s Kulturhuset Cultural Centre will be teeming with street theatre, dance, a hallay party, circus acts, concerts, art, outdoor film, walking tours of the city, lectures and photography.

The Swedish winners of the art competition DNA; Diesel New Art, has been announced. The works of Anna Lundh, Niklas Holm, Petra Axelsson and Helga Härenstam was elected by the jury and will be exhibited in a show that starts September 30 in Copenhagen and travels to Oslo and Stockholm. As part of the Fashion Week, Swedish denim brand Nudie Jeans will have an exhibition at Fellow Designers Gallery, Högbergsgatan 28, Stockholm August 8–September 9. (Opening hours 12–16). Nudie Jeans was founded by Maria Erixon, (former designer at Lee Jeans). Here's an interesting article (in Swedish) about the start-up of the company.
Fellow Designers are Eva Liljefors and Paul Kühlhorn — some of Swedens finest graphic designers. Have a look at their work in their (not recently updated) portfolio and at their business representative Agent Form.

Absolutely fabulous — kind of surreal, jewelery from Dada's Diamonds, a company formed by Konstfack students Kajsa Öberg och Ida Forss. Their Wonderland Collection is currently exhibited at Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm, August 17–September 11. Here's an interview by Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, in Swedish...obviously.

It's the 25:th, which means payday for most Swedes... So here's another shopping link for you. Spunk Design has been around for about five years and sells art, fashion garment, jewelery and accesories. Spunk design was founded by Anna Forsberg and the general idea is to showcase unestablished artists and designers. Anna will move to Beijing for a year of Chinese language studies, so from September 1 the store will be run by Ulrika Jansson and Fia Hjelte. The site is only available in Swedish.

Nitty Gritty unwraps this autumns fashion arrivals and updates their online store. Nitty Gritty is the one store in Stockholm if you're out to get your hands on some handpicked British casual and mod style garment. Brands represented include Lyle & Scott, Stone Island, Duffer and more. The store is situated at Krukmakargatan, on Södermalm and also includes a hairdresser, coffe shop and the outlet department cleverly named ”Needy Greedy”..

It's been 40 years since David Rowland designed the classic chair ”40/4”. Svensk Form celebrates the fact with the exhibition ”40 chairs in four feet” at Skeppsholmen, Stockholm September 1 – October 23. The chair is famous for being the very first stackable chair and the name, 40/4, derive from the fact that it's possible to stack 40 chairs which measures four feet (120 cm).
Twentytwo internationally known designers has been invited to create and present their own interpretation of the chair. Amongst them, Swedish designers Gunilla Allard and Fredrik Mattson. More info and other upcoming events can be found here.

A handskateboard exhibition called ”The First Annual Handskateboard Charity Design Exhibition 2005” will be held in the streetwear store Sportif at Renstiernas gata in Stockholm on August 25–September 16.
Botique Sportif asked nine of their favourite creators to design a ”handskateboard” (7x27cm). The boards are for sale and each creator decides which charity-organisation the money will go to.
The participating designers are: CKR, Defyra, Don’t Feed the Swedes, graffiti writers Ziggy & Disey, Hundarna från Söder, Radio LXMBRG and Samir Alj Fält.

If you're a design student at university level, this competition might be of interest: Electrolux Design Award is an international design competition, jointly arranged by Electrolux and designboom open for participation of officially registered university students.
The subject of the competition is ”Imagine the home in 2020” and the submissions requested are designs and concepts within the categories ”Scenario” and ”Product”.

Registration and submission deadline September 15 and the winner will be announced during Future Design Days in Stockholm, November 14, 2005.

Utställningssalongen in Stockholm shows the work of former Liverpool School of Art student John Lennon August 17–28. The limited artworks consist of lithographs, serigraphs and copper etchings hand produced from Lennons original drawings. All work is signed by Yoko Ono with John's personal chop and available for sale.

Rozzetta is the creation of Jenny Mörtsell, made as a Master Degree project at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. The project is ”a tribute to the fantaboulous fenomena italo-disco” and consists of the video and 12" for the song ”Fantasy.” Catch a live performance this Friday, August 19 at the club Startling at Landet.

The readers of the newspaper Metro has chosen two out of ten adverts to represent Sweden in the Metro Global Print Awards 2005. The ads for Dove by McCann and Åhléns by Ogilvy will go on competing against adverts from 17 countries and the winner will be presented on September 7.

The street, art & cirkus festival Subörb will take place in Stockholm suburb Alby,this weekend, August 11–14. The massive programme of artists and events are too numerous to mention here but to name a few; WC breakdance crew Project Soul (Korea), rappers Saïan Supa Crew (France), Swedish artists The Latin Kings, Laleh and legendary graffiti writers Ziggy & Disey, Ians, Erse, Puppet, Attila, Atom, Reson etc.

Design agency ACNE is starting their own magazine called Acne Paper.
The first issue features a 38 pages fashion report with clothes from Acne, photographed by Peter Gehrke. There's also interviews with Marie Chaix from Self service, the artist Jonny Wooster and Kitsunés and Daft Punks Gildas Loaec and a series of portraits of Swedish artists photographed by John Scarisbrick. The magazine will be published twice a year in A3 format and distributed internationally at the cost of 4 euro. More info at Resumé (in Swedish only).
